The CW has renewed “Superman & Lois” for a shortened season 4 on the network but “Gotham Knights” didn’t survive the network’s purge…
“Superman & Lois” will return for season 4 on The CW and it will soon be the only DC series remaining on the network.
On Monday, The CW officially announced plans to renew the series starring Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch for 10 episodes — down from 13 episodes in season 3 — after coming down to the wire on whether or not to bring the show back for another year. The new CW owners at Nexstar have been slashing costs since purchasing the network with an aim to turn a profit — something The CW has never done nor was created to do from the beginning.
As part of a large turnover at the network, The CW has cut ties with many expensive productions while bringing in lower cost series along with sports programming like the deal with LIV golf. “Superman & Lois” was on the bubble for a renewal because while the series was the No. 2 rated show on the network behind only “Walker,” the show was also rather expensive due to the expansive special effects required.
Ultimately, The CW opted to bring back “Superman & Lois” for another year, although rumors have swirled that the production costs will be lowered with the potential for the total number of series regulars to be reduced. As it stands, “Superman & Lois” boasts 12 series regulars on the call sheet.
“All-American: Homecoming” was also renewed on Monday alongside “Superman & Lois.”
“We are thrilled to bring All American: Homecoming and Superman & Lois back to The CW,” Brad Schwartz, the network’s new President of Entertainment, said in a statement. “These series are two of our strongest performers across our linear and digital platforms with some of the most passionate fanbases in all of television.
“We are grateful to our partners at Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions for their continued collaboration, and we cannot wait to get started on the new seasons.”
While “Superman & Lois” was renewed for season 4, the newest DC related series “Gotham Knights” was ultimately cancelled after only a single season on the network.
The final two episodes of that series are set to air on June 20 and June 27.
With “Gotham Knights” cancelled and “The Flash” ending just recently, “Superman & Lois” will now stand as the only DC series on The CW, which was a network that was best known as the home to comic book based shows like “Arrow,” “The Flash,” and “Legends of Tomorrow.”
