There’s more casting news from Matt Reeves’ upcoming film ‘The Batman’ with Colin Farrell and Andy Serkis in talks for two important roles…
‘The Batman’ won’t land in theaters until June 25, 2021 but the anticipation for the latest take on the Dark Knight is already starting to build as director Matt Reeves continues to add to an already impressive cast.
The latest talks include Colin Farrell in negotiations to potentially play the Penguin in the upcoming Batman film that is expected to take place during the early part of his crime fighting career.
Farrell has previous comic book movie experience after he played Bullseye in the much maligned “Daredevil” movie starring Ben Affleck in the lead role. More recently, Farrell has starred in films such as “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” as well as a season spent on television in “True Detective” on HBO.
Previous takes on the Penguin include Danny DeVito in Tim Burton’s “Batman Returns” as well as Robin Lord Taylor portraying Oswald Cobblepot in the Batman prequel “Gotham” on FOX.
Assuming a deal is reached, Farrell would be the third villain in “The Batman” alongside Zoe Kravitz, who is already on board to play Catwoman with Paul Dano portraying The Riddler. Meanwhile, Robert Pattinson will be taking up the mantle to play Batman with Jeffrey Wright on board to play Commissioner James Gordon.
A second piece of casting news for “The Batman” is Andy Serkis in talks to star as Bruce Wayne’s famous butler Alfred Pennyworth.
Much like Farrell’s negotiations, a deal isn’t done just yet for Serkis to land the role but talks are ongoing to bring the Marvel veteran into the DC fold after he previously portrayed Ulysses Klaue in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” as well as “Black Panther”.
If Serkis officially lands the part he would join a long line of actors who have previously played Alfred, although in recent years the character has enjoyed a rugged makeover with actors such as Sean Pertwee in “Gotham” as well as an Alfred origin story called “Pennyworth” that is currently airing on the EPIX network.
“The Batman” is expected to go into production next year ahead of the 2021 release date.
