“The Batman” will produce its first official spinoff with “The Penguin” after the limited series was ordered at HBO Max with Colin Farrell returning in the lead role…

The first official spinoff from “The Batman” has been ordered to series at HBO Max.

“The Penguin” — currently a working title so the name may change — will be a limited series on the HBO streaming service with Colin Farrell returning to the role he portrayed in Matt Reeves’ movie that just opened on March 4.

In the film, Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin was the right hand man to mob leader Carmine Falcone (played by John Turturro) as he ruled over Gotham City with an iron fist.

The upcoming series will chronicle Oz’s attempt to secure that same power for himself while setting up a criminal empire inside the already corrupt city he calls home.

“Colin exploded off the screen as the Penguin in ‘The Batman,’ and having the chance to thoroughly explore the inner life of that character on HBO Max is an absolute thrill,” Reeves said in a statement. “Dylan [Clark] and I are so excited to work with Lauren [LeFranc] in continuing Oz’s story as he grabs violently for power in Gotham.”

Farrell has received rave reviews for his performance as Penguin in “The Batman” where he’s almost unrecognizable behind heavy makeup in order to portray the scarred up gangster. Now he’ll return for the limited series headed to HBO Max.

“The world that Matt Reeves created for ‘The Batman’ is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot,” Farrell said. “I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin.

“Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.”

“The Penguin” is the first spinoff to receive a series order following the release of “The Batman,” which has already become a critical and commercial success for Warner Bros. Reeves has also started to work on another spinoff that he plans on basing around Arkham Asylum — the prison that houses Batman’s rogues gallery of villains — with hopes that will get picked up to series as well.
