‘The Batman’ Spinoff TV Series Coming to HBO Max from Matt Reeves and Terence Winter

Matt Reeves will get an even bigger universe to work with for his upcoming film “The Batman” with a new spinoff TV series headed to HBO Max…

“The Batman” from director Matt Reeves will land in theaters in October 2021 and now he’s expanding the universe from that film with a new TV series spinoff that will air on HBO Max.

On Friday, HBO Max officially announced plans for a straight to series order for a Batman spinoff series from Reeves and Terence Winter, who is well known for his work on “The Sopranos” as well as the creator behind “Boardwalk Empire.”

The new series will be set in the Gotham City Police Department and “will build upon the motion picture’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms.”

“This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream,” Reeves said in a statement.

In the comic book universe, a similar series existed called “Gotham Central,” which focused on the police officers working in Gotham City while Batman served as vigilante justice for the many criminals plaguing the town. That series featured many well know Gotham City police officers including Renee Montoya, Crispus Allen and Maggie Sawyer. It’s unknown at this time what characters from “The Batman” movie might crossover or appear in the spinoff series.

Reeves just recently inked an overall deal with Warner Bros. for his upcoming television projects and “The Batman” spinoff series will be the first to come from that deal.

This new series would be the latest spinoff from the Batman universe after previous shows including “Gotham” touched on a similar subject matter. It remains to be seen exactly what this new series will focus on but obviously with Reeves and Winter involved, it certainly appears HBO Max is rolling out the red carpet to make this a bigger than average show for the platform.

For now, Reeves will concentrate on filming “The Batman,” which had production shut down earlier this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. That film will see Robert Pattinson take over in the lead role as Bruce Wayne-Batman along with Zoe Kravitz starring as Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, Colin Farrell as the Penguin and Paul Dano as the Riddler.

That film is currently expected for release on Oct. 1, 2021.
