Matt Smith is experiencing his final days as Doctor Who before the new Doctor is introduced in a matter of weeks…

It’s been a busy year for the Doctor. After celebrating the show’s 50th anniversary, Matt Smith is hanging up his trademark bow tie (which we must remind you, bow ties are cool) in this year’s Christmas special The Time of the Doctor.
The official synopsis has been revealed, showcasing a Christmassy affair and the Doctor’s potential demise – not really fair considering he loves Christmas but it’s always interrupted by bad things going on.
Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe’s deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars – and amongst them, the Doctor. Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe.
The planet has been revealed as Trenzalore – the Doctor’s ill-fated destination, last seen in The Name of the Doctor. Viewers may remember that Trenzalore is the Doctor’s final resting place, with the TARDIS serving as his tomb.
How exactly this works out with The Day of the Doctor’s revelation that The War Doctor now counts as an official Doctor, and that Peter Capaldi’s waiting-on-the-sidelines incarnation is actually the 13th — hinting we’re yet to see some Time Lord trickery as the Doctor nears the end of his regeneration cycle.
