A disappointing box office for “The Exorcist: Believer” has now led to a sequel being removed from the release calendar after director David Gordon Green dropped off the project…
Director David Gordon Green will not return for “The Exorcist: Deceiver” — a direct sequel to 2023’s “The Exorcist: Believer” — and the film has also been removed from the upcoming Universal and Blumhouse release schedule.
The movie was originally set for release on April 18, 2025 but that’s no longer the case with Green dropping off the sequel to focus instead on his upcoming “Nutcracker” film starring Ben Stiller as well as the fourth season of the HBO series “The Righteous Gemstones,” which he produces with longtime collaborator Danny McBride.
Of course the news that Green won’t be returning comes after “The Exorcist: Believer” was a massive disappointment at the box office earning only just over $136 million globally with just $65.5 million domestically. That’s after Universal shelled out a whopping $400 million to get the rights to “The Exorcist” franchise in order to create a new sequel.
Even with the return of Ellen Burstyn to reprise her iconic role as Chris MacNeil from the original film, “The Exorcist: Believer” still failed to gain much traction with critics or the audience.
With that kind of financial investment, it’s safe to assume Universal won’t abandon “The Exorcist” sequels but for now the studio along with Blumhouse are searching for a new director and writer to take over for Green.
