“The Flash” will make its final run with season 9 on the CW with a shortened season with a mid-season premiere on the network…
“The Flash” will make one last run with season 9 on The CW.
The long running DC and Warner Bros. series was renewed for a ninth season earlier this year with speculation that it could end up being the last episodes for the show. Series star Grant Gustin had just negotiated a new contract to return for season 9, which led to speculation that it would mark the end of one of The CW’s most successful shows.
“Nine seasons! Nine years of saving Central City while taking audiences on an emotional journey full of heart, humor, and spectacle. And now Barry Allen has reached the starting gate for his last race,” The Flash executive producer/showrunner Eric Wallace said. “So many amazing people have given their talents, time, and love to bring this wonderful show to life each week.
“So, as we get ready to honor the show’s incredible legacy with our exciting final chapter, I want to say thank you to our phenomenal cast, writers, producers, and crew over the years who helped make The Flash such an unforgettable experience for audiences around the world.“
The final season will consist of 13 total episodes, which is less than than the series has usually contained in the past but Gustin signed his contract to appear in only up to 15 total episodes. Rather than feature episodes without the series star, “The Flash” will end with 13 episodes with the ninth and final season set for a midseason debut on The CW with the last episode currently expected to air in June 2023.
With Gustin already on board, co-star Candice Patton and Danielle Panabaker have also signed on as series regular roles for the final season. Jesse L. Martin, who plays Detective Joe West, is currently only slated to appear in five episodes after landing a pilot of his own on NBC, although it’s possible his appearances could increase if that show isn’t picked up to series.
There’s no word on the rest of the cast, although it’s like “The Flash” will pull out all the stops for this final season.
“The Flash” will come to an end during a precarious time for The CW as the network is expected to be sold in the coming months with new owners at Nexstar not expected to invest as much in original programming. “Riverdale” — another hugely popular series on The CW — will also come to an end with season 6 on The CW.
Originally conceived as a spinoff from “Green Arrow,” “The Flash” has gone onto succeed its predecessor as one of the most highly rated shows in the history of The CW while also getting one more season than the show that helped launch the series.
The CW was once defined by the “Arrowverse” shows that also included “Supergirl,” “Legends of Tomorrow” and “Batgirl” but now all those series have ended. With “The Flash” coming to a close with season 9, the only DC-Warner Bros. related series remaining at The CW is “Superman & Lois,” which was previously renewed for season 3 on the network.
