The highly anticipated prequel to ‘The Sopranos’ has a new title and the film now has a release date scheduled in 2020…
‘The Sopranos’ prequel has a new name and a release date.
On Thursday, it was confirmed that the prequel movie initially called ‘The Many Saints of Newark’ has just been titled ‘Newark’ and the film would open in theaters nationwide on September 25, 2020.
Production on ‘The Sopranos’ prequel ‘Newark’ is expected to start sometime in May with the release date now confirmed for next year.
‘Newark’ was written by ‘Sopranos’ creator David Chase with Alan Taylor directing after he helmed several episodes of the series during its critically acclaimed run on HBO from 1999 to 2007.
While there’s still not much known about the plot of ‘Newark’ what has been revealed is that ‘The Sopranos’ prequel takes place around the time of the volatile Newark riots when the Italian mob was at odds with the African-American community in New Jersey.
The cast for ‘Newark’ includes Alesandro Nivola, who plays Dickie Moltisanti — a character often talked about but never seen in ‘The Sopranos’ television series as he was Christopher Moltisanti’s father and a mentor to Tony Soprano. In addition to Nivola, Michael Gandolfini will play a younger version of Tony Soprano as he takes over the role made famous by his father James Gandolfini, who passed away in 2013.
The rest of the cast includes Vera Farmiga, Ray Liotta, Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen and John Magaro, although there’s still no word on what parts any of those actors will play.
Many characters from the original ‘Sopranos’ series are expected to appear in ‘Newark’ so many of the actors hired already could be playing the younger versions of the ones made famous on the show. There’s still no word if any of the actors or actresses from ‘The Sopranos’ series will make an appearance in ‘Newark’.
Look for ‘Newark’ to land in theaters on September 25, 2020.
