John Carpenter may be returning to one of his most iconic movies with “The Thing” possibly being rebooted by Blumhouse Productions…
“The Thing” may rise again.
Famed horror director John Carpenter is in early talks with Blumhouse Productions on a potential reboot of the 1982 classic film that starred Kurt Russell, Keith David and the late, great Wilford Brimley.
While discusses are in the very early stages, Carpenter mentioned the possibility of rebooting “The Thing” during an appearance at the Fantasia International Film Festival this past weekend.
“We’ve talked about — I think he’s going to be working on ‘The Thing,’ rebooting ‘The Thing,” Carpenter revealed when asked about future projects with Blumhouse. “I’m involved with that, maybe. Down the road.”
Of course, Blumhouse helped produce the recent “Halloween” reboot directed by David Gordon Green that saw Carpenter serve as an executive producer while also providing the score for the movie alongside his son. Carpenter is also working on the score for the upcoming sequel “Halloween Kills,” which is due out in 2021.
“The Thing” was technically a remake of earlier versions of a similar story based on the 1938 book “Who Goes There?” by John W. Campbell Jr. In Carpenter’s version, a research team based in Antarctica faces off with a parasitic alien life form that can assume the shape and appearance of anyone or anything it touches.
Hollywood has attempted to remake “The Thing” in the past including a forgettable 2011 film starring Joel Edgerton, which did not have Carpenter’s involvement, and the movie largely bombed at the box office.
While the 1982 version from Carpenter was also considered a disappointment when it was first released, the movie eventually gained a cult following as more and more people saw the film and took note of the masterclass in horror orchestrated by the original creator behind the “Halloween” franchise.
Now “The Thing” is heralded as a horror classic among the best films ever directed by Carpenter.
Obviously, the reboot from Carpenter and Blumhouse is in the very early stages of development but it certainly seems like a franchise worth revisiting, especially given the success the studio had with “Halloween” and two planned sequels coming soon.
