“Tales of the Walking Dead,” which is a spinoff from “The Walking Dead” series has officially been ordered to series at AMC….
“The Walking Dead” universe continues to expand at AMC.
On Monday, “Tales of the Walking Dead” — a spinoff anthology series that will feature new and existing characters from “The Walking Dead” universe — was officially ordered to series.
The six-episode first season will go into production in early 2022 with Channing Powell, who previously served as a writer on both “The Walking Dead” and “Fear the Walking Dead” will be the showrunner for the new series with chief content officer Scott M. Gimple also serving as a creative consultant and executive producer.
“This series, more than any other in the Walking Dead Universe, runs on new voices, perspectives, and ideas — bringing to life stories unlike any we’ve told before,” Gimple said. “I’m thrilled to be Channing’s consigliere, helping in every way I can to make those new visions real for the best fans in TV.”
“Tales of the Walking Dead” was put into development around the same time that the announcement was made that “The Walking Dead” flagship series would be coming to an end with season 11.
While the original show is ending, AMC is heavily invested in “The Walking Dead” universe with “Fear the Walking Dead” set for return on October 17 along with the limited two season run for “The Walking Dead: World Beyond” continuing as well.
There’s also a new “Walking Dead” spinoff that will focus on the characters Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) that will kick off once the original series comes to an end.
“Tales of the Walking Dead” will feature six stand alone episodes with some prior characters from “The Walking Dead” universe returning for the new series. While AMC hasn’t made any public statements about plans, it would seem that any particularly well received episodes could also potentially end up as the basis for additional spinoffs in the future.
