A new “Dracula” related film titled “Last Voyage of the Demeter” has found a star.
Corey Hawkins — best known for his role in “The Walking Dead” as well as a breakout roles in “Straight Outta Compton” and “24: Legacy” — will star in the lead role with André Øvredal directing. Øvredal is best known for his recent work on the film adaptation of “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.”
Deadline first reported the news.
“Last Voyage of the Demeter” is actually based on a single chapter called Captain’s Log from Bram Stoker’s classic novel “Dracula.” The film tells the story of the Russian schooner, Demeter, “which was chartered to carry private cargo – twenty four unmarked wooden crates – from Carpathia to London. The film will detail the strange events that befell the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a terrifying presence onboard the ship. When it finally arrived near Whitby Harbor, it was a derelict. There was no trace of the crew.”
Øvredal has made quite a name for himself in the horror genre beyond his work on “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.” He also directed the critically acclaimed feature film “The Autopsy of Jane Doe,” which starred Emile Hirsh and Brian Cox as well as the movie “Trollhunter.”
Plans for “Last Voyage of the Demeter” have been in the works for nearly two decades with several writers and directors attached to the project. Zak Olkewicz (“Bullet Train”) is now attached to write the latest version of the script.
With casting underway, it appears the long journey to bring this film to life is finally drawing near.
