The planned reboot of “True Blood” will no longer be moving forward at HBO after a new series was being developed…
Vampires may live forever but “True Blood” will not be resurrected.
A reboot of the popular HBO series was being developed with “Riverdale” creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa serving as one of the lead writers but it appears all plans to revive the show are now dead.
That’s according to HBO and HBO Max CEO Casey Bloys, who confirmed several scripts for a “True Blood” reboot had been ordered “but nothing that felt like it got there” and plans for a new series were scrapped.
News about a potential “True Blood” reboot started back in 2020 with Aguirre-Sacasa signing onto the project along with “NOS4A2” producer Jamie O’Brien and original series creator Alan Ball was even on board as an executive producer, although that may have been a credit in title rather than him having some creative force behind the show.
Regardless, HBO decided to pass on the “True Blood” reboot.
The original series, based on the books by Charlaine Harris, ran for seven seasons with Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer leading the cast as Sookie Stackhouse and a vampire named Bill Compton. The show served as a launching pad for several careers including Alexander Skarsgard, who rocketed to stardom after playing a vampire named Eric Northman on the show.
There’s actually an edited version of “True Blood” now airing on TNT, which is part of the Warner Bros. Discovery family of networks, with the full series also available on HBO Max. For now it appears that will be the only way you’ll get “True Blood’ with the reboot now dead and buried.
