Following a successful fourth installment of “True Detective,” HBO has ordered a fifth season of the anthology series with Issa Lopez returning as part of an overall deal with the network…
“True Detective” will return for a fifth season.
Following the massive success of “True Detective: Night Country,” which produced the highest ratings in the history of the series, HBO has officially ordered season 5 with Issa Lopez returning as showrunner.
Lopez wrote and directed every episode of “True Detective: Night Country,” which starred Oscar winner Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as a pair of cops in Alaska trying to solve the disappearance of eight scientists from a local research facility outside the isolated town. In addition to returning for the fifth season of “True Detective,” Lopez has inked an overall deal to develop projects exclusively for HBO.
“From conception to release, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life,” Lopez said in a statement. “HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with Casey, Francesca and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again.”
Originally created by Nic Pizzolatto, “True Detective” became a breakout hit for HBO following the first season, which starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Two more seasons followed but struggled to find the same level of success as the first.
Pizzolatto eventually exited HBO after his deal with the network came to an end.
HBO then decided to revive the “True Detective” brand and sought out Lopez to develop an idea for the series after she received critical acclaim for her horror film “Tigers Are Not Afraid.”
Now Lopez will stick around with her new deal at HBO and begin developing an idea for the fifth season of “True Detective.”
