The first trailer for “Borderlands” has arrived as director Eli Roth seeks to adapt the popular video game franchise into a new feature film starring Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis…
The first look at Eli Roth’s next film “Borderlands” arrived on Wednesday as the famed horror director tips his toes into adapting a video game franchise into a new movie starring Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis.
The games debuted back in 2009 and there are now six different installments of the series with over 50 million units sold.
Now Roth will take a stab at an adaptation, which has remained a remarkably difficult endeavor for some filmmakers in the past, although the recent success of “The Last of Us” on HBO has given new hope that video games can be translated into prestige films and TV series.
Here’s the synopsis for the new “Borderlands” movie, which is due out in theaters on August 9:
“Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home, Pandora, the most chaotic planet in the galaxy. Her mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Edgar Ramírez), the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. Lilith forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits – Roland (Hart), a seasoned mercenary on a mission; Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Florian Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound protector; Tannis (Curtis), the oddball scientist who’s seen it all; and Claptrap (Jack Black), a wiseass robot.
“Together, these unlikely heroes must battle an alien species and dangerous bandits to uncover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other. Based on one of the best-selling videogame franchises of all time, welcome to BORDERLANDS.”
With the film taking place on a strange, alien planet and music provided by “Do Ya” by Electric Light Orchestra, the first “Borderlands” trailer is giving off some serious “Guardians of the Galaxy” vibes — and that’s definitely not a bad thing!
