The first look at “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” has arrived as Kevin Smith revives the classic franchise and picks up right there the 1980s cartoon left off…
He-Man is back!
The hugely popular cartoon series that ran for two seasons and 110 episodes will return with a new show — “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” — with writer and director Kevin Smith on board as a showrunner.
The first trailer for the epic new series debuted on Thursday with the first half of the inaugural season (five episodes) set to arrive on Netflix on July 23.
The new series will pick up right where the 1980s cartoon left off with Smith promising to deliver a series that will be enjoyable to both adults and children alike. The trailer certainly showcases that with plenty of sword-clashing action and a perfectly placed soundtrack with the song “Holding Out for a Hero” by Bonnie Tyler.
According to Smith, the story will carry on from the 1980s cartoon with a fight between He-Man and Skeletor fracturing Eternia and separating the guardians of Greyskull from their posts. The show will also explore the mystery surrounding Prince Adam and the few people who know he actually transforms into He-Man.
“Only certain people know the secret that Prince Adam is really He-Man. We build our entire story on who was left out of the secret and the damaging trickle-down effects of that,” Smith told EW about the show.
The new trailer features all the favorite characters from the original cartoon series but this time around there are plenty of new voices featured in “Masters of the Universe: Revelation.”
The great Mark Hamill will lend his voice for Skeletor while former “Supergirl” star Christopher Wood will be the person voicing both Prince Adam and He-Man. “Game of Thrones” alum Lena Headey will play Evil-Lyn while “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” herself Sarah Michelle Gellar portrays Teela.
It was also announced on Thursday that Netflix will include a special post show following the five episodes that drop on July 23 with Smith hosting the series.
