The first look at “Ms. Marvel” has arrived as Kamala Khan realizes her cosmic powers while becoming the first Marvel Studios’ Muslim superhero…
The first trailer for the upcoming Disney+ series “Ms. Marvel” has arrived as Marvel Studios introduces its first Muslim superhero in the former of teenager Kamala Khan.
Much like her comic book counterpart, Kamala is a nerd at heart, who all but worships superheroes in her spare time but none more so than Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel. Newcomer Iman Vellani takes on the lead role in the upcoming series from showrunner Bisha K. Ali with a six episode first season set to debut on the streaming service on June 8.
Now there are some differences between Kamala Khan from the comics and the new version about to get her own series — most notably the kind of powers she possesses and likely how she got them.
In the comics, Kamala is gifted her abilities to essentially stretch and morph her own body after she’s exposed to Terrigen Mist, which activates her latent Inhuman abilities. While it’s entirely possible that the Inhumans will eventually appear in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe — and let’s just try to forget the terrible attempt to make that TV series work from a few years ago — it looks like Kamala Khan will be taking on a different kind of powers for this series.
The trailer shows Kamala possessing some sort of cosmic energy that allows her to project those powers and make energy constructs, which is similar to the way Green Lanterns use power rings to do much the same thing over in the DC Universe.
One thing that’s definitely the same — Kamala still adores Captain Marvel and that’s the role she takes up while protecting her neighborhood in New Jersey when bad things start to happen.
Eventually, Kamala Khan will meet her idol with the upcoming film “The Marvels’ coming from director Nia DaCosta with Oscar winner Brie Larson reprising her role for the sequel.
