The full trailer for “True Detective: Night Country” arrives with a look at Jodie Foster leading a murder investigation in the dark and icy night in Alaska…
“True Detective: Night Country” will arrive on HBO on January 14 but the first full length trailer has arrived for the upcoming series starring Oscar winner Jodie Foster in the lead role.
This will be the fourth season of the anthology series but the first with a new showrunner as “Tigers Are Afraid” filmmaker Issa Lopez takes over while writing and directing all of the episodes. Original series creator Nic Pizzolatto remains a producer on the latest season.
Here’s the synopsis for “True Detective: Night Country” courtesy of HBO:
“When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”
Judging by the trailer, Detectives Danver and Navarro have a complicated history together, which caused them to stop working together but the disappearance of eight scientists draws them back into a case together again.
There are also hints to ties back to the first season of “True Detective,” which featured a story centered around a cult based in a prominent family from Louisiana that hunted and carried out ritualistic murders. A huge part of the family’s mythology centered around a spiral pattern that was found on many of their victims, which one killer equates to the theory of “time is a flat circle.”
The same spiral pattern makes a couple of appearances in the new trailer for “True Detective: Night Country” with one of the victims having that symbol carved into their head. It’s a symbol that Navarro mentions she’s seen previously, which could hint at those connections to the first season of “True Detective,” which remains arguably one of the best single seasons in television history.
For now, take a look at the new trailer for “True Detective: Night Country” and stay tuned for more coverage as the season begins on Jan. 14.
