Wesley Snipes might be interested in picking up the sword to play ‘Blade’ again with a couple of potential projects in the works…
Long before Kevin Feige was churning out blockbuster after blockbuster at Marvel, there were days when superhero movies were considered almost untouchable by most of the major studios.
While there were a few blockbusters like Tim Burton’s ‘Batman’, the genre as a whole was essentially ‘B’ list movie fare in the 1990’s. That was until an ‘R’ rated feature called ‘Blade’ came out in 1998 starring Wesley Snipes in the starring role.
‘Blade’ was a completely different kind of superhero movie — not marketed towards all ages while also starring an African-American lead — and perhaps most importantly, the film has held up very well over the past 20 years.
These days you can throw a rock and hit two or three comic book based movies at the theater no matter the time of year.
Considering the kind of hype surrounding the Marvel Cinematic Universe lately, there’s been a lot of talk about the possibility of rebooting the ‘Blade’ franchise with a new movie or perhaps introducing that character into the shared universe.
Now according to Wesley Snipes, there have been conversations and interest in going back to the world of ‘Blade’ in the near future.
“There are a lot of conversations going around right now and we’re very blessed to have the enthusiasm and interest in something coming from that world again,” Snipes told Vice recently. “We’ve created two projects that fit perfectly into this world and, when people see them, I think they’re only going to have a problem with deciding which one they love the most.
“All the main execs [at Marvel] and my team, we’ve been discussing for the past two years. Everyone’s enthusiastic about it, everybody gets it. But they got a business to run and they gotta square the things that they gotta figure out before they can get to it, I guess. In the meantime, we got a business to run and our own slate of things to do so.”
While Snipes didn’t tease too much regarding what those projects might be involving ‘Blade’, he could only promise that what they could do in 2018 would make the original films pale in comparison.
“The next time you see something in [the Blade universe], mark my words: what we did before is child’s play compared to what we can do now,” Snipes said.
There’s no telling when or if this will happen but it certainly seems like a good time to return to the ‘Blade’ universe.
