“Westworld” will return for a fourth season on HBO.
On Tuesday, the network officially announced a renewal for the series co-created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. The third season currently has two episodes left to air with the next installment coming on Sunday night at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
“From the western theme park to the technocratic metropolis of the near future, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed every twist and turn from the minds of master storytellers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy,” HBO programming president Casey Bloys said in a statement. “We can’t wait to see where their inspired vision takes us next.”
“Westworld” started out as a series set in a future theme park where people would travel and carry out their deepest and often times darkest fantasies with robots known as hosts serving as their counterparts. By the end of the first season, the highly evolved hosts gained consciousness and sought to break free. The latest season of “Westworld” takes part far away from the theme park with one particular host seeking to start a revolution in order create a new world just for them.

“Westworld” has enjoyed critical and commercial acclaim ever since first debuting on HBO and it has become one of the most ambitious series on television with a very elaborate production that often times requires years between seasons. Given the current climate with the coronavirus pandemic shutting down studios across the globe, there’s no exact timeline when “Westworld” season 4 might go into production but it’s not likely the show would return to HBO until at least the latter part of 2021 if not 2022.
