“Wonder Woman 1984” will be released in 2020 after all.
The long awaited sequel starring Gal Gadot from director Patty Jenkins will land in movie theaters on Christmas day but the film will also be released simultaneously on the HBO Max streaming service free of charge for subscribers.
“Wonder Woman 1984” will remain on HBO Max for one month after release.
“As we navigate these unprecedented times, we’ve had to be innovative in keeping our businesses moving forward while continuing to super-serve our fans,” said Ann Sarnoff, Chair and CEO, WarnerMedia Studios and Networks Group, which includes Warner Bros. Pictures. “This is an amazing film that really comes to life on the big screen and, working with our partners in the exhibition community, we will provide that option to consumers in the U.S. where theaters are open. We realize that a lot of consumers can’t go back to the movies due to the pandemic, so we also want to give them the option to see WONDER WOMAN 1984 via our HBO Max platform.”
International audiences will see “Wonder Woman 1984” released a week earlier on Dec. 16.
As movie studios continue to adjust to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, most major films have been pushed back to 2021 and beyond including the entire slate of Marvel Studios films, which included “Black Widow” and “The Eternals,” which were both originally slated to be released this year.
“Wonder Woman 1984” was originally scheduled for release in late 2019 and then pushed back to June 2020 until the pandemic forced another shift for the upcoming sequel. Now “Wonder Woman 1984” will debut on Dec. 25 with audiences able to see the film in theaters or on HBO Max.
Director Patty Jenkins also addressed the news that her film will be released on Christmas day in both theaters and HBO Max.

“Wonder Woman 1984” serves as a sequel to the first “Wonder Woman” film released in 2017 with the story shifting forward several decades later. In the 1980’s, Diana finds herself in a much different world than where we first met her during World War I. She will now face off against a new kind of enemy in Maxwell Lord (played by Pedro Pascal) as well as Barbara Ann Minerva aka Cheetah (as played by Kristen Wiig). The film will also reunite Wonder Woman with Steve Trevor as Chris Pine reprises his role from the original movie.
