The main cast for the upcoming “Yellowstone” prequel titled “1883” is now set.
Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill will lead the series that blazes a trail across the Old West as the Dutton family embarks on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land — Montana.
Country music stars turned actors — and real life husband and wife — McGraw and Hill will portray James and Margaret Dutton, the patriarch and matriarch of the Dutton family while Elliott in a role that seems made for him will play Shea Brennan, a tough as nails, handsome cowboy with immense sadness in his past.
It’s Shea’s job to guide the group traveling from Texas to Montana to start a new life, which will eventually become the largest ranch in the United States.
“It all starts with the writing, and Taylor Sheridan is a brilliant writer,” Elliott about ‘Yellowstone’s creator in a statement. “I think the western genre speaks clearly to both of us. The classic struggles of man against man, man against nature, and man against himself. It’s all there, in 1883, and I’m honored to be a part of it.”
Of course Elliott is an Academy Award nominated actor with dozens of recognizable roles over the years including his recent appearance in “A Star Is Born,” which earned him the Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Elliott has also appeared in films such as “Tombstone,” “Road House,” “The Contender” and “The Big Lebowski.”
On television, Elliott has previously appeared in series such as “Justified” and most recently “The Ranch,” where he was a lead cast member and producer on the show.
As for Hill and McGraw, both have acted in several roles previously but this will be the first time they’ve starred in anything together.
“This is the opportunity of a lifetime,” Hill said. “The Duttons are a formidable family and it is an absolute dream to bring such a strong female character like Margaret Dutton to life. I am humbled and honored to work with Taylor and his entire team.”
“1883” is an exclusive series for Paramount+ as the network continues to expand the “Yellowstone” universe thanks to the immense popularity of the main series, which is set to return for season 4 on the main Paramount Network later this year.
