“Yellowjackets” is set to return for season 2 in March but the creators say they are currently on track for five total seasons of the breakout series…
There are still a lot of secrets to unlock when “Yellowjackets” season 2 debuts on March 24 but not everything will be revealed until the series comes to an end.
But when exactly would that be?
Well, according to series creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, they are currently plotting out five total seasons of the breakout hit show on Showtime. It seems that was always the plan for “Yellowjackets” even as some of the stories and characters have changed through writing the scripts and performances on the show.
“The original plan was about five seasons, and we feel like we’re still on track for that,” Lyle told EW. “There’s always room for things … [but] we don’t really see this as being more than a five-season show.
“I think that there are shows that can go forever, but I think that when you’re telling such a deeply serialized story and it’s about these characters’ lives, you want to reach a satisfying conclusion and not just drag things out forever. This isn’t really one of those setup shows where it can go anywhere. So far, we’ve been really on track. Season 2 is largely what we always planned, but you do make a lot of discoveries along the way and so it’s always a little bit surprising.”
“Yellowjackets” takes place in two separate timelines with the series centered around a prominent high school girls’ soccer team that ends up stranded in the wilderness following a plane crash. What they did to survive over the next 19 months — and those who never made it back alive — serves as a central focus on the show.
The story also carries forward 25 years later with the surviving members of the plane crash still attempting to put their lives back together with some of those secrets starting to get unearthed — and there are deadly consequences attached to everything revealed.
While the creators behind “Yellowjackets” have an idea about where the series will go along with many of the major twists and turns, they haven’t plotted out every single detail. There have also been changes to the story from what was initially envisioned thanks in large part to the performances that unraveled during the first season of the show.
A perfect example are Jeff (Warren Cole) and Callie (Sarah Desjardins), who are Shauna’s (Melanie Lynskey) husband and daughter, who weren’t initially expected to be a major part of the series but instead both roles were expanded going into season 2.
“In terms of some of the major places that we wanted to land or move the story to, that is happening, but a lot of the dynamics and what it means to the characters are different than I necessarily thought they would be,” Nickerson said. “Some of the major sign posts are still happening, they’re just happening in different ways, which I kind of feel like is perfect for keeping the experience alive and vital on our side.
“We take a lot of excitement from the discovery portion. It’s a big part of our process and the thing that we enjoy the most about doing this. We feel like the architecture that we started with is still holding up, but all the rooms are turning out pretty different in this exciting way.”
When “Yellowjackets” season 1 ended, the lives of many of the characters still alive in 2021 were starting to fall apart — particularly with a disturbing revelation surrounding Taissa after she was running for public office while it appears Lottie — a girl suffering from schizophrenia who ran out of medicine after the plane crash and started experiencing horrifying visions — has been busy building a cult since returning home and it appears she has big plans for the rest of her former teammates.
New episodes of “Yellowjackets” will start on Showtime on demand starting on Friday, March 24 with the episodes then airing on Showtime starting on Sunday night, March 26.
