It looks like Zombieland 2 might be happening sooner rather than later with the writers teasing production and a release date…
While they can’t exactly kill Bill Murray a second time, the writers behind Zombieland are finally ready to produce a sequel.
Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who are also the writers behind Deadpool 2 that opens this weekend, have been working on a follow up to their 2009 breakout hit for quite some time but now it appears all the pieces are in place for the sequel to move forward in 2019.
“We’re going on the tenth anniversary of Zombieland. Zombieland came out October of 2009. We don’t know what you get someone for their tenth anniversary, but it may be a Zombieland 2.” Wernick told Vulture this week.
“The hope is that we’re shooting that thing early 2019 for an October of ’19 release with the original cast, by the way.”
Zombieland was originally shot on a budget of just over $23 million but ended up pulling in more than $100 million at the box office. Zombieland starred Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin in the main roles as four survivors of the zombie apocalypse making a cross country trip together.
Ever since the success of the first film, rumors of a Zombieland sequel have been swirling but the movie never quite came together. Now with Reese and Wernick as two of the most in demand writers in Hollywood, it seems their passion project to make Zombieland 2 a reality is very close to happening.
All of the actors from the original Zombieland have previously expressed interest in returning and now it appears the sequel will finally happen next year!
