The highly anticipated ‘Zombieland’ sequel is expected to land in theaters in October 2019 after receiving a green light on the film on Friday…
‘Zombieland’ will live again.
The 2009 cult classic will return with a sequel set to go into production in early 2019 with plans to release the film by October 2019 in time for the 10 year anniversary.
The entire cast from the original ‘Zombieland’ including Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin have signed on to return for the sequel that will be helmed by Ruben Fleischer, who also helmed the original film a decade ago. Fleischer is currently finishing up his work on the new ‘Venom’ film due out in October.
Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese — the writers behind the first ‘Zombieland’ feature — are returning as well with a script they penned for the film. Wernick and Reese, who have come into the spotlight in recent years for their work on the two ‘Deadpool’ movies, have championed a new ‘Zombieland’ for quite some time and now their dream is being realized.
“This is one of those projects that fans have wanted to see happen for a long time – and no one wanted to see it happen more than Emma, Woody, Jesse, and Abigail,” Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch said in a statement. “These are some of the most in-demand actors and I think they are making this movie because they love these characters. We are thrilled Ruben was willing to come back to direct the sequel, as his work on Venom has been truly amazing.”
‘Zombieland’ wasn’t a massive hit at the box office as the film took in just about $75 million domestically but the movie has remained a cult classic ever since it was released with hopes from a hardcore fan audience that the cast would return for a sequel. Of course since the first ‘Zombieland’ was released, all of the actors involved have gone onto huge careers including an Academy Award for Emma Stone.
While details on the plot for the new movie are sketchy right now, the current script reportedly has the quartet traveling to the White House and the heartland of America where they will meet a whole new kind of zombie threat as well as new human survivors as well.
There’s no exact release date for the ‘Zombieland’ sequel but current plans are to release the film by October 2019 in time for the 10 year anniversary.
