24 will live another day but the show will officially go on without Kiefer Sutherland playing Jack Bauer.
FOX announced on Friday that a pilot order has been given for 24: Legacy — a new series set in the same universe as 24 but with an entirely new cast of characters not to mention a new leading man.
According to FOX, 24: Legacy will focus on a military hero returning home with some troubling news and he asks CTU to help save his life while stopping a potential terrorist threat on U.S. soil.
“The pilot was just ordered, so in terms of casting, we have had conversations with the producers,” FOX chairman and CEO Dana Walden said on Friday. “The lead is Eric Carter. He is clearly a significant focus of the show; there is also a female co-lead who is a former head of CTU.”
Rumors began to surface on Friday that producers behind 24: Legacy are seeking an African-American lead for the part of Eric Carter but there’s no word on the female lead as of yet.
24 was a critical and commercial success for many years while landing over 70 Emmy nominations during its run. The series returned in 2014 for a limited run but at the conclusion, no one was sure if 24 would come back again or as another iteration of the show.
Sutherland eventually bowed out and decided to no longer play the character of Jack Bauer, even in a guest starring role, and FOX ultimately opted to move forward with the project while essentially rebooting the entire series with a new cast of characters.
24: Legacy is expected to begin filming this winter but no debut date has been speculated yet.
