Can you imagine The Walking Dead without Carol saving the day multiple times over the last few seasons? Well it almost happened according to one of the producers of the show…
Once upon a time following the death of Sophia on The Walking Dead, producers and writers behind the show didn’t really know what to do with her mother Carol and were on the verge of killing her off during season three.
Carol has become a show favorite over the last couple of seasons transforming from a timid housewife to a gun toting bad ass capable of taking out an entire city full of cannibals or event a band of wild wolves but The Walking Dead nearly didn’t keep her around according to producer Greg Nicotero.
Nicotero said in a recent interview that following Sophia’s death, no one knew for sure how to write for Carol or what direction she should go and killing her off seemed like the most logical plan. After a lot of discussion and debate, Carol was left on the canvas while it was T-Dog who ended up getting sacrificed when one character had to go.
“Not a lot of people know that when we were shooting season three, in the episode where T-Dog died, there was a moment where Carol was going to die in lieu of T-Dog’s character.” Nicotero said.
“At that point there was some concern in the writers’ room that they didn’t know where to take her character. So the fact that [showrunner] Scott Gimple and the writers have been able to craft this amazing journey for her just goes to show that there is a tremendous amount of story to tell for a lot of these characters.”
Can you imagine the events that unfolded at Terminus without Carol?
Or how about the Wolves attacking Alexandria earlier this season without Carol around to save the day?
It sure seems like The Walking Dead made the right move to keep her alive because Carol has become a centerpiece of the show over the last few seasons and will likely be an integral part of the second half of season six that picks up Feb. 14.
If anybody can go toe-to-toe with Negan when he finally arrives, it’s Carol Peletier.
