Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is crossing over from motorcycle clubs and bastard executioners to the world of comic books with a new limited series called Lucas Stand ….
Before Kurt Sutter begins work on a new Sons of Anarchy spinoff series based on The Mayan motorcycle club, he’s going to dabble in the comic book world with a new series called Lucas Stand with the first issue due out June 1 from BOOM Studios.
The series follows a former special ops soldier named Lucas Stand, who has seen far too many awful things from his days in the field and he decides to take his own life. Instead of dying, Lucas is spared by a dark angel named Gadriel, who offers him a job killing demons who have escaped from hell in exchange for sins being taken off his mortal soul.
Sutter describes Lucas Stand as “the darkest antihero or hero I’ve ever created” — and that’s going up against Jax Teller and a host of other characters he’s created over his years on television.
“Over the course of mankind, mortals who were technically not evil people and weren’t supposed to land in hell have been corrupted so much by the way we’ve learned to live,” Sutter said in a recent interview. “And the temptations and the greed and the opulence of our lifestyles have turned the people who were supposed to be on a more altruistic path to the dark side.”
Sutter says he actually pitched Lucas Stand to FX as a potential TV series but the writer says executives were more ‘curious than excited’ about the project.
So rather than toil away in the attic, Sutter decided to move the series from TV to comic books while working with BOOM Studios, who also produced the Sons of Anarchy comic for several years.
Sutter pens the series alongside Caitlin Kittredge with art by Jesús Hervás.
The positive side of doing a comic book versus a TV show is there are no financial restraints on how far Sutter can go with this idea in terms of effects, blood or language that he might not be able to unleash on cable.
“There’s all these crazy demons and amazing implements of death, and (I’m) able to run with it without worrying about ‘How the fuck are we going to do this?’ ” Sutter said. “So that’s been very liberating.”
Lucas Stand will debut on June 1 from BOOM Studios.
