FX Orders X-Men Spinoff Legion to Series

It looks like the X-Men spinoff titled Legion will officially debut on FX after the network ordered the show to series on Tuesday…

FX is getting into the mutant business after ordering Legion — a spinoff from the X-Men comic books — to series with an eight-episode first season with production starting in Vancouver this summer before debuting in early 2017.

The show was developed by Noah Hawley, who is well known for his work on the FX series Fargo, and he will serve as an executive producer on Legion.

Legion tells the story of David Haller:

“Since he was a teenager, David has struggled with mental illness. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real.”

In the comic book, David Haller is actually the son of Charles Xavier but there’s no indication whether or not that relationship will be explored in the TV show version or if he’ll be given a different back story.

Legion stars Dan Stevens (The Guest) in the title role along with Rachel Keller (Fargo), Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) and Jean Smart (Fargo)

“Marvel Television is thrilled to not only have our first partnership with FX go to series, but working with the enormously talented Noah Hawley makes it even better,” said Executive Producer and Head of Marvel TV, Jeph Loeb, “From the first time we heard Noah’s vision to his exceptional script and cast through the extraordinary filming of the pilot, we knew the series would be incredible.”

Marvel Television has already several very successful series including Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC as well as Daredevil and Jessica Jones on Netflix. Now with Hawley on board to produce, it looks like Legion might become one of the most highly anticipated new series of 2017.
