For all the complaints about Superman in the DC Extended Universe, it sounds like ‘Supergirl’ wants the authentic Man of Steel we all know and love….
Superman will finally fly on screen in ‘Supergirl’ season 2 and from the sound of things, it will be a take on the classic version of the character.
Former ‘Teen Wolf’ star Tyler Hoechlin was cast to play Superman in ‘Supergirl’ season 2 several months ago and EW finally released an image showing the actor dressed in the classic red and blue outfit for the “Man of Steel”.
Superman is set to appear in the debut episode of season 2 on October 10 as ‘Supergirl’ shifts from CBS to the CW this year so it won’t be much longer until everyone will see the latest incarnation of the classic character on TV.
Hoechlin has said that he grew up watching Superman on TV but his favorite portrayal of the character still remains Christopher Reeve, who played the iconic superhero for four movies starting in 1978. That being said, Hoechlin isn’t looking to do an imitation of any past actor who played the part and wants to make Superman his own.
That being said, Hoechlin also added that his version of Superman will be an homage to the classic version of the character from the comic books that fans will definitely recognize and one that fits perfectly in the ‘Supergirl’ universe.
“It’s Superman as I think he was intended to be,” Hoechlin said. “which is just an incredible symbol of hope to kids that they can do anything, that they can be good people, and that good people can triumph over evil.
“You don’t have to be dark and brooding and always in this state of masculine toughness. He sits in that very hopeful and optimistic place that Kara tends to be in.”
The words “dark and brooding” whether on purpose or on accident seem to speak directly to the portrayal of Superman by Henry Cavill, who plays the part in the DC Extended Universe on the big screen. That version seems to be a much more dour of the character and director Zack Snyder has received a mountain of backlash for the way he’s put Superman on screen in both ‘Man of Steel’ and ‘Batman V. Superman’ because it doesn’t seem like the beloved character best known from the comic books.
While DC has been raked over the coals by critics and fans alike for some of the blunders portraying Superman through the first two films in that universe, it seems like the TV side will handle him much differently.
The Superman played by Hoechlin certainly sounds like a throwback to the comic book version much more than the one created by Cavill through two films thus far.
The world will get to judge when Hoechlin debuts as Superman when ‘Supergirl’ returns on October 10 for season 2 on the CW.
