In the latest ‘Supergirl’ recap, Cadmus unleashes their newest weapon against Supergirl and Superman…
By Damon Martin — Editor/Lead Writer
Everything changes.
That’s the theme to the latest episode of ‘Supergirl’ as Kara deals with a number of changes going on in and around her life.
Her cousin Superman flying into town and sticking around National City for a few extra days is a welcome change, but Kara fails to realize how that’s affecting everyone else around her including Alex.
Last week, Kara finally decided on her dream job to become a reporter, but sadly without a single day spent doing journalism, she has to realize that there’s more to this job than just wanting it.
And as it turns out, Kara will no longer have Cat Grant hovering nearby to offer her worldly advice with a side of snark after she announces her exit from the company — at least temporarily.
Oh and a new villain rears its ugly head this week, making all sorts of new problems for Kara and her friends.
As Nobel prize winner Bob Dylan once wrote “the times they are a-changing”.
With that said, let’s recap the latest episode of ‘Supergirl’ titled ‘The Last Children of Krypton’…
#TooMuchFun
Thanks to Superman sticking around town, Supergirl has a sidekick handling all this hero business as she teams up with her famous cousin while stopping all manner of criminals around National City. From fires to robberies, no job is too much for the Super cousins much to the chagrin of some of the folks back at the DEO.
J’onn is still stewing over his long standing feud with Superman because he’s kept a cache of kryptonite on hand just in case the DEO ever needs it while Alex Danvers is suddenly feeling like the third wheel in her relationship with her sister because Kara is all about spending time with Clark these days.
Thankfully, Winn is still there to turn to mush every time Superman is around to make him feel welcome.
The celebration of family time doesn’t last very long this week after Superman and Supergirl are called away to check on a possible bridge jumper, but when they arrive they meet Project Cadmus’ newest weapon — John Corben has been transformed into Metallo.
It’s not bad enough that Cadmus turned a professional assassin into a cybernetic super villain, but they also gave him a heart made of pure kryptonite and after he blasts both Supergirl and Superman with it, they realize that this isn’t going to be any typical fight. Metallo ends up wounding Supergirl worse than her cousin, but thankfully Superman gets the upper hand and punches the bad guy half way across the city before they make their escape.
Back at the DEO, Supergirl is recovering while Superman is irate because J’onn J’onzz promised that all of the kryptonite on Earth was in their possession. Sadly, both J’onn and Alex lied to the Kryptonian cousins because a shipment of the deadly material was stolen four months ago and it’s never been found.
Until now.
A New Enemy
Despite his anger towards J’onn for lying to him, Superman agrees to take the Martian Manhunter with him to the Fortress of Solitude so they can research the material used to make Metallo and hopefully that will give them a clue on who made him. It turns out Metallo has been forged with Promithium — the same impenetrable substance that makes up Cyborg — but they don’t need to wait long to find out who has been using the ultra rare metal.
Cadmus makes a very loud announcement to all of National City that they have arrived to rid the planet of all the aliens who have invaded and that includes Superman and Supergirl. Don’t forget Project Cadmus is also the same organization that’s kept Jeremiah Danvers under lock and key for more than a decade.
While the shadowy organization is determined to bring down the Kryptonian cousins, the evil doctor (played by Brenda Strong) who leads them is disappointed that Corben couldn’t finish the job himself. So she volunteers one of her assistants to undergo the same transformation to become a second Metallo.
Now the two super-powered kryptonite hearted bad guys are going after Superman and Supergirl with a brand new plan of attack.
You Can’t Just Be a Reporter
As Kara is ultra excited to begin her career as a reporter, she’s introduced to Cat Grant’s personal pick to head up the new investigative journalism department — Snapper Carr.
Snapper is an old school, by the books reporter, who has no time to teach or coddle a wannabe like Kara so he immediately dismisses her when’s he shows up for work. Kara runs back to Cat to complain and that’s when she’s hit with some devastating news.
Cat Grant is leaving.
Cat has decided to take a leave of absence from the company to travel and find herself again after the monotony of the job has just gotten to be too much. She hired Snapper to handle the journalism side of Cat Co. while she places James Olsen into her position to oversee the company while she’s gone. Yes, James Olsen — photographer and head of the graphics department — is now in charge of Cat Co.
This is all starting to be too much for Kara to handle because now she has to fend for herself at work and things at the DEO aren’t getting any better with Cadmus showing up and Superman still at odds with J’onn.
Divide and Conquer
When John Corben shows back up in National City, Superman and Supergirl arrive to stop him but they soon find out that a second Metallo has appeared in Metropolis. That sends Superman off to stop him while Kara is left to battle her own Metallo in National City.
The cousins don’t fare so well without backup and that leads Winn to try and work his magic to develop a special kryptonite absorbing suit that can save Superman and Supergirl from the wrath of the Metallo’s.
Meanwhile, Alex is feeling extra left out with her sister having family time with Superman so she decides to go on her own mission. Alex wants to track down the turncoat who stole the kryptonite shipment and handed it over to Cadmus.
Alex does good detective work, but sadly gets drawn into a trap where she meets the head of Project Cadmus, who taunts her about her father. Alex is offered a job at Project Cadmus, but she declines, which then earns her a death sentence. Thankfully, Alex is far more bad ass than the two goons who try to wrangle her and then Supergirl shows up just in the nick of time to finish them off.
Back at the DEO, Winn finishes off the super suits but Supergirl and Superman still have to deal with two Metallo’s, who are ultra powerful and attacking in different places at the same time. Kara comes up with a solution — Superman and J’onn head to Metropolis to stop that Metallo while Supergirl teams up with Alex in her kryptonite powered super suit to stop John Corben.
In the end, the two against one attack works wonders as J’onn rips the kryptonite heart out of one Metallo and Alex shoves a pipe through John Corben’s heart to bring him to a stop as well.
With the Metallo’s stopped, J’onn agrees that the kryptonite reserves would be better handled in Superman’s care so he hands over the weapon and the two aliens settle their feud. Meanwhile, Kara writes up a story with eyewitness accounts of the battle between the Super cousins and the Metallo’s and slams it on Snapper Carr’s desk as proof of her commitment to become a reporter. Snapper accepts the story and decides to bring Kara under his wing.
She still doesn’t get a desk, though.
Finally, Superman goes back home to Metropolis after a couple days spent with his favorite cousin and Supergirl says goodbye to Cat Grant with a special visit before she leaves National City.
Post Credit Scene
In an early part of the episode, the DEO discovers that the alien that was recovered from the Kryptonian pod in the premiere has been siphoning off energy from the building to power himself back to full health.
At the end, Supergirl goes to check on him but the alien wakes up and immediately grabs her by the throat as the episode fades to black. We know the alien is named Mon-El and he’s from a neighboring planet next to Krypton but is he here to save the day or to go after Supergirl? We should know more next week
