Mel Gibson on Short List for Possible ‘Suicide Squad 2’ Directors

Mel Gibson has reportedly been approached about possibly directing the ‘Suicide Squad 2’ sequel from Warner Bros…

Warner Bros. is moving forward with ‘Suicide Squad 2’ and they’ve narrowed down their director search to a few famous names.

At the top of that list — at least when it comes to raising a few eyebrows — is Academy Award winner Mel Gibson, who his reportedly been approached by the studio to see if he might be interested in taking the helm on ‘Suicide Squad 2’.

According to several reports, talks with Gibson and Warner Bros. are very early but it’s certainly possible that the two sides could eventually come to some sort of an agreement.

Gibson just recently popped back on the radar after directing ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ this past year, which was nominated for several Academy Awards including a nod for his work as director. Gibson’s career resurrection comes several years after the actor was in very hot water following a drunk driving arrest where he used anti-Semitic language, which cost him many studio jobs over the next few years.

While Gibson is one of the directors on the wish list of Warner Bros. to pick up the ‘Suicide Squad’ franchise following the first movie directed by David Ayer, there are reportedly a few other names also joining him.

Daniel Espinosa (Safe House), Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies) are also supposedly getting a look from Warner Bros. as possible directors to lead ‘Suicide Squad 2’.

The first ‘Suicide Squad’ movie made $745 million worldwide, which earned the superhero franchise a sequel, but the movie was largely panned by critics ahead of the release. It appears Warner Bros. is looking to move the ‘Suicide Squad’ sequel in a new direction while Ayer remains in the studio family as he focuses on ‘Gotham City Sirens’ — a movie focused on a trio of famous female DC villains including Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie, who is also expected to appear in the ‘Suicide Squad’ sequel as well.
