Tobe Hooper — best known for directing iconic horror films such as ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ and ‘Poltergeist’ — has died at the age of 74.
Hooper is best known for his work on ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a 1974 horror film shot for less than $300,000 that became an iconic piece of cinema history that has continued to live on for decades.
The film introduced the legendary horror film character Leatherface, who was loosely based on real serial killer Ed Gein.
Hooper stayed busy with the horror genre for most of his career including work on the 1982 classic ‘Poltergeist’, which was written and produced by Steven Spielberg.
In 1979, Hooper worked on the television version of the classic Stephen King horror novel ‘Salem’s Lot’, which is regarded as one of the best adaptations of his work.
Hooper stayed busy throughout his career with several more directing projects including a pair of episodes of the Showtime series ‘Masters of Horror’.
Hooper is survived by his two sons.
