Here’s a bit of shocking news … Jamie Foxx is expected to reprise his role as Elector for the upcoming “Spider-Man 3” film starring Tom Holland…
Judging by this latest bit of news about “Spider-Man 3” it would appear that Marvel is definitely dipping into the multiverse.
Jamie Foxx — who first appeared as the classic villain Electro in 2014’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” starring Andrew Garfield in the lead role — is currently in talks to reprise that part for the third “Spider-Man” movie coming from Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures.
This is certainly an unexpected bit of casting for several reasons.
First, Foxx’s character Electro actually died in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” but perhaps more importantly, that movie ended up being a disappointment both critically and at the box office. The reception for that sequel along with a massive email leak at Sony led to that particular Spider-Man franchise being shelved for good.
Eventually, Sony recovered by teaming with Marvel Studios, which allowed them to share Spider-Man as a character and that has reinvigorated the series with Tom Holland now starring as the webslinger with Jon Watts directing the first two installments in the franchise — “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”
While Foxx returning as Electro is a surprise, there’s a real possibility that this is the start of the multiverse within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has been rumored for some time now.
The upcoming Doctor Strange sequel has the idea baked right into the title — “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and the possibility that Foxx is returning as an Electro from an alternate universe just helps play into those theories.
The “Spider-Man” universe has already dipped back to past films with the addition of J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson in “Spider-Man: Far From Home” after he previously played the part in three separate films starring Toby Maguire in the role. Fans enjoyed the return of Simmons and perhaps more of that is in store with Foxx coming back to play Electro again.
Filming on the third “Spider-Man” movie is expected to begin later this year with the film currently slated for a Nov. 5, 2021 release but thanks to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, no date seems to be safe these days.
For now stay tuned for more information on the upcoming “Spider-Man” sequel as filming begins and perhaps we’ll learn more about Foxx’s return to the franchise.
