NBC is getting into the superhero business again with a new series script ordered surrounding the anti-hero supernatural detective John Constantine…
Comic book films and television shows are certainly all the rage right now and it seems NBC is getting on board as well with a new series being developed from the DC Comics character John Constantine: Hellblazer.
For those that don’t know the comic book version that was created by famed writer Alan Moore along with Steve Bissette, and John Totleben, Constantine was also popularized in the 2005 film of the same name starring Keanu Reeves.
Constantine is the definition of an anti-hero who dabbles in sorcery and straddles the line between heaven and hell with his big toe dipped in either at any time. Currently the character is featured in an ongoing series in the DC Universe as well as the title Justice League Dark.
The series will be executive produced by David S. Goyer, who might be known best for writing the scripts to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel. He is also currently scripting the sequel to the multi-million dollar Superman franchise for Man of Steel 2.
The series has been ordered to script by NBC, but has not officially been picked up yet until the network officially greenlights a pilot.
NBC is no stranger to the superhero genre with the megahit turned megaflop Heroes as well as their failed attempt at creating a hero in The Cape. Now they’ve turned to the DC Universe for a new series just a day after the comic giant sold the concept of ‘Gotham’ — a Batman prequel surrounding the rise of Jim Gordon through the Gotham Police Department — to Fox with a series order already completed.
