There’s a new Man of Steel in town as “Superman: Legacy” has officially landed the lead roles for both Superman and intrepid reporter Lois Lane…
Up in the sky … it’s a bird … it’s a plane …. it’s a new Superman!
On Tuesday, the lead roles for the upcoming “Superman: Legacy” film were finally announced with David Corenswet taking over as Superman/Clark Kent while Rachel Brosnahan has been cast as Lois Lane.
The casting news comes after an exhausting search that involved numerous screen tests and meetings with potential actors to fill the highly coveted roles in what will ultimately serve as the launching pad for the new extended DC universe under the creative eye of James Gunn.
Gunn wrote “Superman: Legacy” and will direct the upcoming film with production on the movie reportedly starting in early 2024.
As for the actors cast in the roles — Corenswet, 29, has been an actor almost all his life first appearing in theater productions before eventually attending the Julliard School and then moving into films and television. In recent years, Corenswet is probably best known for roles in a pair of Ryan Murphy series — “The Politician” and “Hollywood” — as well as starring opposite Mia Goth in the horror film “Pearl” released in 2022.
Meanwhile, Brosnahan, who appeared to be the leading candidate to land the Lois Lane role from the jump, is an Emmy winning actor for her role in the Amazon Prime series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” She was also previously nominated for an Emmy for her work on “House of Cards” while also appearing in films such as “Patriots Day” and “The Courier.”
Corenswet and Brosnahan will now take over two of the biggest roles in pop culture with only three previous actors portraying each part on the big screen. Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder starred as Superman and Lois Lane in four films together after originally kicking off in “Superman” from Richard Donner. Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth starred as the duo in “Superman Returns,” which was ultimately the only time either of them would appear in those roles. Finally, Henry Cavill and Amy Adams took over the roles as Superman and Lois Lane in Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” before both made various appearances in several other DC films including “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice” as well as the “Justice League” movie.
It will be up to Corenswet and Brosnahan to carry the mantle of Superman and Lois Lane in the new DC extended universe where Gunn will be crafting a shared story that will crossover from film, TV and animation.
“Superman: Legacy” is due out on July 11, 2025.
