Following years of development ideas at FX that never resulted in a series, popular comic book ‘Powers’ will finally land on the Sony Playstation network as their first live action TV show…
For many years, FX executives put money behind the idea of developing a series around the popular comic book ‘Powers’ by all-star writer Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming. The series got as far as a pilot being shot with Jason Patric starring, but eventually the show was shelved and ended up in developmental hell along with a slew of other once imagined TV shows.
Now years after FX finally gave up on the project, the Sony Playstation network will pick up ‘Powers’ as a 10-episode original series to help launch their new TV network for subscribers of their online system.
‘Powers’ focused on a pair of detectives who investigated crimes perpetrated by and against those possessing super human abilities. The series ran for nearly 80 issues between a couple of different imprints, and was one of the most highly regarded comics produced in the last 20 years.
But without finding the right combination of pieces to move the series in the right direction at FX, Powers eventually floundered and failed. Now the show will get new life at the Sony Playstation netwrok with writer Charlie Huston, who along with Bendis will serve as the show runners for the new series.
It’s hard to say whether Sony’s first foray into live action television will be a success given the inaccessibility of the show to anyone that doesn’t own a Playstation console, but it’s still brave to take a chance while making a series that is likely targeted right at the 18-34 year old demographic.
