Avengers 2 director/writer Joss Whedon talks about the film’s villain and how he needed an even bigger opponent to challenge Earth’s mightiest heroes…
Shooting on ‘The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron’ is well underway now in London with stars capturing pictures around set and even a few snaps making it out into the internet.
What’s known about the movie right now is still very little in terms of plot, but we do know there are a lot of new cast members joining the fray this time around including Elizabeth Olsen playing The Scarlet Witch and Aaron Taylor-Johnson playing Quicksilver. Also joining the team this year will be Paul Bettany playing the android Vision and of course James Spader voicing the murderous robot Ultron.
In the comic books, Ultron is a sentient being who decides that humanity should suffer and die while bending to his will and only The Avengers are big and bad enough to oppose him. How Ultron appears in this movie remains to be seen, but director/writer Joss Whedon revealed a little bit of detail surrounding his homicidal creation when speaking to Empire Magazine recently.
First off, Whedon says that adding to the cast wasn’t done just with the intention of making the second Avengers movie bigger. He wanted to add cast members that made sense, including the villain who could truly give The Avengers a run for their money.
“I fiercely dislike the idea of just throwing in more people for the sake of doing that,” Whedon said. “But last time I had all of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes versus one British character actor, and I needed more conflict.”
So to add more conflict Whedon is adding Ultron to the mix, and he’s going to be everything a villain should be and more.
“I’m having a blast with Ultron,” Whedon said. “He’s not a creature of logic — he’s a robot who’s genuinely disturbed. We’re finding out what makes him menacing and at the same time endearing and funny and strange and unexpected, and everything a robot never is.”
It will be interesting to see how Ultron is not only built and created, but what turns him into the killing machine that we all know him to be from the comic books. Given the current status of the Marvel Universe following the events in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, all bets are off on who brings The Avengers back together and what they will have to do to try and stop the murderous rampage of Ultron.
The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron opens in theaters on May 1, 2015.
