It looks like Jack Bauer won’t be saving the day again because Kiefer Sutherland has confirmed he’s done with ’24’ outside of a possible cameo role with the series…
When it was announced that Kiefer Sutherland would be returning to play Jack Bauer at least one more time for the limited event series ’24: Live Another Day’ fans of the long running series rejoiced.
Things got even better when the show received critical praise as Sutherland brought Bauer back to life, bigger than ever, and the reception was phenomenal.
The show was always touted as a limited series, but there were still hopes that Sutherland might return for one more mission as Jack Bauer.
Unfortunately it looks like Jack Bauer has stopped the world from collapsing for the final time.
Speaking at a press engagement ahead of the Emmys this past week, Sutherland confirmed that he won’t be doing ’24’ again even if the series does get revived for another season. Talks are ongoing currently to develop another season of ’24’ with a new character in place to take over for Sutherland as the lead protagonist in the series.
“I’m not coming back to do 24 because there are other things I want to do,” Sutherland said. “And when they said limited-series run, I meant it. But I’ve always felt, from Season 1 on, that 24 is such a great idea that this can go on forever. I think if you create a new cast or other characters in the telling of this story, it will bring a freshness.
“And let’s face it there’s only so many bad days one can have before the show becomes a mad comic. And what I don’t want it to be is a mad comic. It doesn’t rule out to one having a cameo.”
It appears Sutherland has left the door open to appear in the new ’24’ series if the show gets picked up at FOX for another run, but he definitely won’t be playing the lead character and will instead turn those duties over to another actor or actress.
It’s going to be hard to imagine ’24’ without Sutherland’s raspy voice or break neck moves so whoever steps in to fill the role has some mighty big shoes to fill.
