Despite an early ratings success, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD is apparently not a lock to return for a second season…
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD came into the fall of 2013 roaring like a lion, but after a few not so well received episodes, the one-time darling of the geek world because a critically panned series with a lack of direction and bad story development.
The series did maintain big ratings, however, and it gave the crew behind the show time to try and right the ship in a better direction.
The latest critical analysis behind the show is more positive than it was at the beginning of the season, but ratings have steadily dropped since the debut last year. Regardless, the overall success of the show seemed to indicate Agents of SHIELD would definitely get a second season.
Apparently, that’s not as set in stone as you might think.
According to a recent scorecard update from Entertainment Weekly as they plot the course for all the major networks with their renewals and cancellations, Agents of SHIELD isn’t guaranteed to get another season despite the show’s early success and recent critical turn around.
“Ambitious but disappointing. Surprisingly not a lock to return,” the report stated about the Marvel show on ABC.
It’s interesting to hear because just about everyone predicted that the show would almost certainly come back for a sophomore effort, and hopes were that by then the new action/drama would find its footing and a loyal audience to follow along.
Now that future doesn’t seem as set as Agents of SHIELD closes in on its first season finale later this year. It’s also interesting to note that Marvel has several new series being picked up on Netflix including Daredevil and Luke Cage, so if Agents of SHIELD gets the axe at ABC, could it join the other shows on the subscription based service?
Only time will tell if Agents of SHIELD will come back strong or end up on life support by the time they reach the climax of the first season.
