It appears ABC is already ready to double down on their Marvel property with a new Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff series currently in the works…
As Marvel prepares to embark on a new deal with Netflix that kicks off later tonight with the debut of ‘Daredevil’ and three more series already planned for the next few years, it appears ABC is ready to invest in a future with the company as well.
A spinoff for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is currently in the works from Marvel and ABC with current executive producer Jeffrey Bell and Paul Zbyszewski leading the charge for the first script to put into series development. If the show is picked up — and there seems to be a strong case that it would — Zbyszewski would likely serve as show runner.
As far as the possible story for an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff, none of the current reports on the deal have any details, but from watching the show the most logical breaking point would be in one of two possible directions based on the current series.
One — the splinter Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. group run by Robert Gonzales (Edward James Olmos) could maintain a secondary unit that would operate independently from the regular team headed up by Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg).
Two — Skye and her new found powers could break off into a new series based on the introduction of the Inhumans, which would also play into the larger plans for Marvel’s feature movie set for release on July 12, 2019.
Whatever the play, it appears Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will begin to head that direction this season so if the spinoff series is picked up the story would naturally lend itself to a new show.
Stay tuned for more details on the potential Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff as it becomes available.
