The battle for the new Supreme rages on while Fiona and Marie team up to take down the witch hunters…
By Damon Martin — Editor/Lead Writer
Following a few weeks off for the holidays, American Horror Story: Coven returned in full form Wednesday night including a guest appearance by none other than Stevie Nicks! The job of the new Supreme continues to loom large over the entire academy while Fiona teams up with Marie Laveau to dispatch of thine shared enemies.
Delphi Must Die
As it turns out, Fiona and Marie make better friends than enemies because it doesn’t take them long to find many ways they can help one another. With a little help from Cordelia, the group finds out that Hank was never a loving, caring husband but actually a witch hunter from a long line of witch hunters traced back to the roots of Salem. The witch hunters from that time have survived centuries and are now owners of a $50 billion organization called Delphi. Now it’s up to Fiona and Marie to bring them to their knees after the attack on the voodoo hair shop left everybody, including Queenie, dead.
Cordelia wants to help further, but her mother quickly strikes her down for being such a fool and never realizing that Hank was playing her from the beginning. Cordelia’s downward spiral goes even further later in the episode when she feels completely useless and powerless amidst a weird, creepy musical session courtesy of Myrtle. Cordelia smashes all of her botany lab equipment and pretty much just goes away, giving up that she can ever do anything good again to help the coven.
Meanwhile, Fiona and Marie cast a spell that sicks the FBI and the SEC on Delphi seizing their assets and sending the company into a free fall. It doesn’t take long for the owner (Hank’s father) to realize there’s magic behind this and it’s time for these witches to go.
The Key to Life Ever After
Amidst the new friendship sparked between the witches and the voodoo queen, Fiona finally embarks on another mission, which is to find out how exactly Marie has lived for over 300 years. Marie explains that she gave her soul to a powerful voodoo god named Papa Legba (who looks an awful lot like Papa Shango) and in exchange she must provide him with one innocent soul each year and for that she gets to live forever. This time around when Papa Legba appears to her, he’s asking for the soul of a newborn baby, which just happens to be how this whole vicious life sucking circle started except 300 years ago it was Marie’s own child that had to be sacrificed for her to live eternal.
Well, I think we all know Fiona could give a shit about innocence so she sprinkles down some fine cocaine and enchants Papa Legba to appear for her as well. He lays down the same rules and of course Fiona agrees, but just as he’s about to seal the deal with a kiss, he calls the whole thing off. It seems Fiono has no soul to sell thus he can’t take that for his bargain to come true.
Instead, Fiona talks to her lover the Axe Man and between the two of them they come up with another plan to ensure her long life — just kill all the other witches in the coven.
Speaking of Witch….
The battle for the new Supreme is on so let’s give a run down of the race —
Misty Day — She’s the popular front runner right now after displaying her powers of resurrection in front of Fiona and it seems the old Supreme is on board with her taking the test of the seven wonders. Before she gets there, however, Fiona busts out a big surprise — Stevie Nicks is in the house where she serenades a bewildered and mystified Misty before handing over one of her personal shawls for the young witch to keep for her very own. Misty is of course on cloud nine but she’s got competition.
Madison — She’s a bit younger and probably doesn’t even know who Fleetwood Mac is so she’s not impressed in the least by Stevie Nicks performance. She asks Fiona for Eminem instead, but finds out that Marshall wouldn’t be into her. Madison is now convinced that she is the new Supreme so her job is to get rid of the competition. She proves to Nan and Zoe that following her death and resurrection that the heart murmur that would have at one time eliminated her from being in the running to become Supreme has now disappeared. To further her cause, Madison lures Misty to a funeral and tries to turn her against the idea that she is the Supreme. Before she knows it, Misty gets clocked over her head by a brick and tossed into a casket that is about to be placed deep inside a burial chamber. I’m quite sure Misty will return with a vengeance, but for now she’s tucked away while Madison feels accomplished at eliminating her latest rival.
Nan — She keeps saying she could be the Supreme but no one believes her. Nan works to convince everybody by proving she now has powers of mind manipulation in addition to her clairvoyant abilities. Nan, with Zoe in tow, goes to visit Luke when she finds out that her crush has passed away. To make matters worse, Nan then finds out that his mother has cremated the body, thus eliminating anyone bringing this kid back to life. As retribution once Nan reads his mother’s mind and realizes she’s responsible for snuffing out the boy’s life, she uses her mind control abilities to have her drink down a bottle of bleach. See ya Patti LuPone, we hardly got to know ya!
The Sacrifice
Above and beyond anything Misty, Madison or Nan are willing to do to prove they are the new Supreme, Fiona wants to stay on her throne and she’s going to kill to keep her spot. So as a gesture to help herself as well as Marie, she sacrifices Nan by drowning her in a bathtub to kill an innocent life and get rid of one possible replacement as the Supreme. When Papa Legba shows up, he’s not convinced Nan is all the way innocent.
“She’s mostly innocent,” Fiona says. “She did kill the neighbor lady, but that bitch had it coming” (that folks is your American Horror Story line of the week!)
Papa Legba accepts the sacrifice and carries Nan off into another world. Her only reply is to say any place is better than this one!
The show closes with another number from Stevie Nicks and we are closing in only a couple of episodes left with the season finale peaking just around the corner! What did you think of the latest episode of American Horror Story: Coven? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
