‘American Horror Story’ creator Ryan Murphy says Jessica Lange is open to a return to the show and maybe even a few seasons worth….
Following the conclusion of ‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ last year it appeared the anthology series was going to move forward for good without original series star Jessica Lange.
Lange was largely the centerpiece of all four seasons of ‘American Horror Story’ since the show landed on FX, but she hinted after season 3 that there might only be one more year of the series left in her.
So creator Ryan Murphy crafted ‘Freak Show’ with Lange’s goodbye in mind and after the show wrapped, she moved onto other projects like her starring turn on Broadway in a production of ‘Long Day’s Journey into Night’. It seemed like Lange was ready to get on with her acting career and move past ‘American Horror Story’ but it seems Murphy is actually the one to blame for her exit in the first place.
“In season 2, Jessica Lange told me that her greatest regret at this point in her career is that she didn’t get to do Long Day’s Journey into Night on Broadway. Other people had the rights to that, so I spent a year, just as a present to her, trying to get those rights,” Murphy revealed recently.
“I said to her, I have a present for you, and that present was that play. That play is happening in the spring, and she really wanted to take some time off and to prepare for that part, because it is such a massive undertaking. I think they start rehearsals later in the year, so it would not have worked with our production schedule.”
Lange’s desire to do the play coupled with the filming schedule for ‘American Horror Story’ made her return for the upcoming season titled ‘Hotel’ basically impossible.
The good news is Murphy says he’s confident that Lange would happily return to the show if he wrote her the right part and at that point he’s sure she’d stick around for two or three more seasons if the characters she played were just as appealing as the last one in ‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’.
“I talk to Jessica all the time, and Jessica is one of those actors that if I went to her with the right part, I know she would say yes,” Murphy said. “She’s said that to me. She’s open to doing another season, two or three, or maybe if the part is big enough, a whole season. That’s how it starts with her.”
So maybe Lange will return for ‘American Horror Story’ season 6 when the show is inevitably renewed by FX later this year?
Stay tuned!
