In the ‘American Horror Story: Roanoke’ recap, a lone survivor walks out of the house from hell after a nightmarish journey into madness…
By Damon Martin — Editor/Lead Writer
The body count on ‘American Horror Story’ this season has been remarkably high and after last week’s episode, there were only a few characters remaining who hadn’t been chopped up, butchered or just killed by any number of spirits or backwoods rednecks.
But with so many people already dead, ‘American Horror Story’ decided to up the ante this week by tacking on three more victims — while adding another layer to the mystery by revealing the one person who survived this season.
According to the lore on the show, the final night of the Blood Moon was the worst — where the spirits were particularly riled up, thirsting for vengeance — and there were plenty of sacrifices to be made before this episode was over.
With that said, let’s recap the latest episode of ‘American Horror Story: Roanoke’ titled ‘Chapter 9’…
Cry Wolf
The owners of a popular “My Roanoke Nightmare” fan site journeyed into the depths of the woods in North Carolina in hopes of eventually finding the real house featured on the show. The three people — Sophie, Milo and Todd — thought they were going to find some creepy landmarks and eventually the house where all these atrocities took place, but they never expected to end up dead.
The downward spiral started when the three of them saw a woman stumbling through the woods looking like she should have already been dead. The trio tracked the woman while trying to offer her help, but she never stopped moving while traipsing around in no particular direction. Finally the group came upon an overturned car and when they looked inside they found the woman they had been tracking this entire time.
She was already dead and what they saw in the woods was her unrest spirit still trapped in the spot where she was killed.
Sophie, Milo and Todd ended up at the police station giving testimony about what they found, but sadly no one believed them. It seems by the time the cops made it back to the overturned car, nothing was inside. Thanks to the popularity of “My Roanoke Nightmare”, the cops in the area had been getting calls like this for months and so skepticism was at an all time high when these three came into the station talking about a dead woman and her spirit in the woods.
The trio of “Roanoke” fans decided to go back into the woods for further proof of what was happening while still trying to make it to the house that started this entire journey. It would be the last time any of them were ever seen alive.
We Have to Go Back
At the conclusion of last week’s episode, Audrey and Lee opened the door to find the Piggy Man waiting for them, but it turns out it was actually Dylan — the actor who portrayed Ambrose — the Butcher’s son — in “My Roanoke Nightmare”. According to him, Sidney the producer had him hidden away in a hotel waiting for a moment just like this to show up and put a scare into the cast, to liven things up after a few days in solitude.
Little did he know what atrocities were being carried out in the house while he was sequestered at the hotel. Thankfully, Dylan is not only an actor but a two-tour veteran who served in Afghanistan and he has what it takes to get everybody out of this situation alive. Well at least he thought he did.
He tells the ladies that they can walk to safety regardless of Lee’s injured leg, but they insist there’s another way. Lee tells him about the Polk farm and the truck that is much closer. Of course she fails to mention the real reason she wants to return is to retrieve the confessional video where she admitted to murdering Mason. Audrey also explains that they left Monet behind, so Dylan concedes and they run off to find the Polk farm.
Once they arrive, Dylan works to hotwire the car while Lee looks for the video and Audrey tries to retrieve Monet. Lee ends up finding a video camera while Audrey frees Monet after she was recaptured by the Polk clan last week. It appears all will end well until one of the last remaining Polk brothers shows up and stabs Dylan while he’s waiting for Audrey, Lee and Monet to return.
Meanwhile inside, the other Polk brother discovers Audrey and Monet trying to escape and he promises to kill them both, especially after they murdered his mother. Audrey makes the smart move to record him threatening their lives before she brandishes a gun she found in the house and shoots him dead. Sadly when they make it outside, Dylan is stabbed and bleeding and the other Polk brother is coming at them.
But with the sun almost down, he notices that there are torches off in the distance and without their mother to make the sacrifices necessary to keep them safe from the Butcher, he’s ready to get out of there. So the last Polk hops in the truck and races off to safety, leaving everyone else behind. Audrey and Monet make a run for it to go back to the house because there’s no alternative left, while Lee gets separated and ends up in the woods all alone.
She’s not lonely for long because Lee soon has an encounter with the first Supreme — Scathach — who offers her the same reprieve as she gave the Butcher all those centuries ago. Lee decides to accept her gift as she bites into a human heart and her transformation is now complete.
There’s Someone in the House
Sophie, Milo and Todd end up back in the woods looking for answers, but instead of finding the house, they run across Lee standing in the middle of nowhere just looking off in the distance. Of course they recognize her from the show, but she’s covered in blood and they can’t figure out what’s happening. Todd approaches her offering help, but instead of accepting, Lee pulls out a cleaver and kills him on the spot. Horrified, Sophie and Milo make a run for it and eventually find the production trailer with Sidney still laying dead outside. Before they can get to safety, Dylan appears out of nowhere and they believe he’s also possessed by whatever force seems to affect people in these woods so Sophie and Milo lock themselves inside the truck.
It’s there they see Lee making her way back to the house — where Audrey and Monet are currently sitting and waiting for morning to come.
When Dylan seems to disappear (because he wasn’t dead, just looking for help), Sophie decides they need to take it upon themselves to go to the house and save Audrey and Monet from being killed by Lee. As it turns out, that was an awful decision.
Back inside the house, Audrey and Monet decide to watch back the tape of the Polks admitting to torturing and attempting to kill them, but instead they find video of Lee confessing to Mason’s murder. Monet feels vindicated because she always knew deep down in side that Lee was responsible for his murder. Out of nowhere, Lee appears but instead of getting into a debate with the two co-stars about her crimes, she simply shoves Monet over the staircase where she crashes to her death on the floor below.
Audrey runs out of the house to try and get away, but instead Lee finds her, stabs her in the shoulder with the hatchet and pushes her to the bottom of the cellar outside where Dr. Elias Cunningham once resided.
Meanwhile, Sophie and Milo finally make it to the house — at the exact same time the Butcher and her minions arrive. Thanks to some found footage from Todd’s recovered iCloud account, we witness Dylan being disemboweled while Sophia and Milo are captured by the Roanoke clan. With Lee overseeing the proceedings — chanting about sacrifices needing to be made — Sophia and Milo are set on fire and burned at the stake.
The Next Day
A cavalcade of police cars tear through the dirt roads leading to the Roanoke house and once they arrive, bodies are found littered on the lawn. It’s a horrific scene with Dylan disemboweled and both Sophie and Milo burned to death. It looks like one giant mass murder until the cops find Lee, passed out and covered with blood a few yards away. She appears to have no memory of what happened and she’s terrified after they find her.
A moment later, Audrey climbs out of the cellar and she can barely believe that the police have arrived after she watched all of her friends, cast members and even the love of her life butchered over the past few days. Audrey is so happy to be alive but then she spots Lee sitting on the edge of one of the police cars.
Without blinking, Audrey grabs one of the cop’s guns and points it at Lee, but before she can pull the trigger, the surrounding police fire first. Audrey is shot and killed, which means Lee is the only survivor from “Return to Roanoke: Three Days in Hell”.
Next week in the season finale — Lee’s story following that night is told as she finally discusses her arduous journey to escape that living hell in a televised special with none other than Lana Winters — from ‘American Horror Story: Asylum’.
‘American Horror Story: Roanoke’ returns next Wednesday night at 10pm ET for the final episode of the season.
