‘American Horror Story’ will wrap up its fourth season this week with the finale of the latest installment, ‘Freak Show’ but the popular FX series is already gearing up for season 5 later this year.
The Ryan Murphy led project was renewed for a fifth season last year and the machine is already in motion for the next version of ‘American Horror Story’ to land on television. The show will return in October 2015 according to FX Networks CEO John Landgraf and he has a few hints about the new series and its direction for season 5.
Landgraf stated on Sunday during an FX panel at the Television Critics Association press tour that Murphy has given him some details about the new season, but he couldn’t reveal much in terms of plot or casting. He is excited about the possibilities of where the show is headed because one of the best parts about ‘American Horror Story’ is the abilty the series has to be completely different from one season to the next.
“One of the things I love so much about that is that it can be radically, radically reinvented in terms of tone, setting, period, characters, cast,” Landgraf said. “I think there’s going to be an unusually large reinvention in between Book 4 (Freak Show) and Book 5 (season 5).”
From the sound of things, Landgraf does expect the next season of ‘American Horror Story’ to return to the present as far as the timeline goes, but he could only say that was his ‘hope’ as of now.
The other burning question on everybody’s mind regarding the series is the potential return or exit of show star Jessica Lange. Rumors have swirled for months that ‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ would be her last with the series, but there’s never been confirmation that she couldn’t possibly return for another run.
As of now not even Landgraf knows what the casting will look like for season 5 of ‘American Horror Story’ and it seems Murphy will have the final call on that list when he starts putting things together later this year.
One other detail revealed on Sunday — Murphy’s newest FX series ‘American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson’ starring John Travolta, David Schwimmer and Cuba Gooding Jr. will debut in 2016 but an exact timeline for the show’s premiere is still pending.
