Fresh off of her success with A Wrinkle in Time, Ava DuVernay has set up her next direction project with The New Gods at Warner Bros and DC…
Ava DuVernay passed on directing Black Panther but instead found a different comic book vehicle to steer instead.
Fresh off her gig directing A Wrinkle in Time, DuVernay has signed on to direct the upcoming film The New Gods for Warner Bros. and DC. The New Gods were created by legendary comic book icon Jack Kirby for DC Comics just after he left Marvel Comics where he was responsible for dozens of characters including Black Panther.
For those unfamiliar with The New Gods…
The New Gods came into existence after the old gods were destroyed during Ragnarok (not Thor) and their world was split in two — one half known as New Genesis is a lush, green paradise while Apokolips is a barren wasteland filled with nightmares. Even if you’re not familiar with all the characters in The New Gods, just about every comic book fan knows Darkseid, who of course rules the hellish wasteland in Apokolips. These two words are constantly at odds with each other while sharing much of the same technology — including Mother Boxes (which was saw in Justice League) as well as boom tubes, which is how the New Gods travel from their world to ours (we also saw those in Justice League whenever Steppenwolf traveled from place to place).
It’s an ambitious project and really out of left field considering DuVernay just opened A Wrinkle in Time this past weekend but she’s wasting no time setting up her next film with Warner Bros. and DC.
