Sheriff Hood discovers Proctor is the man behind Jason’s disappearance and decides to enact a plan on how to take down Banshee’s most powerful villain. Carrie is reunited with Deva and Gordon due to a family emergency. With a little help from Proctor, Alex Longshadow remains Chief of the Kinaho tribe.
The creators of Banshee never cease to amaze with their style of visualization. The opening images of “Ways to Bury a Man” show meat coming out of a meat grinder with Proctor and Rebecca sitting in front of it, very much like a seen from a Coen Brothers movie. The meat would presumably be that of the dead Jason Hood, who met his fate at the hands of Proctor’s right-hand man, Clay, after being caught in the act with Rebecca. Proctor’s niece is clearly uneasy at the sight of it, and having flashbacks of Jason’s murder.
Last time Sheriff Hood spoke to Jason, he helped him escape from Quentin, brought him back to town and said he would pick him up the next morning to take him to the train. Hood shows up at his motel and finds him missing. He also discovers he didn’t take the money, which was still hidden in the toilet bowl and also found his watch on the floor.
Sugar stops by the Cadi and Hood tells him that Jason is missing. Hood’s confidant reveals that he saw Jason with Rebecca at The Forge the night before. That leads Hood over to Proctor’s to question him and his niece. Rebecca admits she slept with him but nothing else. Proctor speaks to Hood in a manner where the undertones of his statements basically take credit for Jason’s disappearance. It’s a show of power toward Hood. He wanted him to know he did it, and let him know he can’t do anything about it. Obviously this doesn’t sit well with the Sheriff and he sets out to set things right. Easier said than done in the town of Banshee though.
“You have no evidence. No body. Not even a name you say. Doesn’t sound to me like there is a crime committed.”—Proctor tells Hood.
Meanwhile back at The Forge, Hood, Sugar and Job are tabling the pros and cons of taking on a man like Proctor head on. Job and Sugar suggest it isn’t a good idea and that he should find other ways to bring him down since he is the Sheriff.
“Most people are happy with one psychopath after them, you really want two?”—Job asks Hood
Although they usually find themselves at odds, Hood asks for some advice from Deputy Lotus back at the Cadi. Matt Servitto once again shines as the Deputy who was passed over after years of servitude. Lotus likes that Hood respects his advice and he tells the Sheriff that if he were in charge he would start shaking Proctor’s trees.
“If I were sheriff, I’d start by shaking his trees. All of them, repeatedly, over and over til something we can use falls out of them.”—Deputy Lotus tells Hood how he would go after Proctor
Back at the Hopewell household, Deva is fixing Max a sandwich and finds him passed out on the floor from an asthma attack. She tries in vain to reach her father, but we see that he is back at The Savoy Gentlemen’s Club, where he has been spending most of his nights. Making the night all the more interesting, the BSD has chosen The Savoy as the first tree to shake and shows up in hopes of some illegal prostitution charges.
Hood finds Gordon in one of the back rooms and the drunk Mayor attacks the Sheriff with unfortunate results. Deputy Kelly would have to come in and pull Hood off of the Mayor. All the strippers are taken back to the Cadi for questioning. Easily the funniest moment of this week’s episode is Lotus asking the stripper, “So let me just confirm, your name is Platinum?” To which she replied, “Platinumm with two M’s, like mmmm she look good.”
After seeing all the missed calls from Deva, Gordon heads over to the hospital and finds Carrie comforting their daughter. Deva unleashes a pent up, explicative rant at her father questioning his whereabouts and calling the family f**ed up, before storming off. The doctor informs both Carrie and Gordon, that Max’s condition has worsened. Carrie and Gordon discuss the issues they may have with their insurance company in regards to Max’s health coverage.
“What I’m saying is there’s a lot of ways to bury a man, especially if you are wearing that badge.”—Sugar says to Hood
None of the strippers give any information while being questioned at the Cadi, except for one, Juliette. She speaks with Hood alone about her relationship with Proctor and gives up information about a former client of hers named Matt Sharp, a neo-nazi who used to run drugs for Proctor.
Hood, Lotus and Deputy Yawners head out to Sharps location, and after some racist taunts thrown at Yawners, a fight breaks out. Sharp tries to escape, but Hood tracks him down and gets the information out of him that he needs about where the drugs are being made. Hood and company, head over to the warehouse to check it out from a distance.
Carrie meets up with Job at Miles Diner, and asks him to take a score with her. Job tells her it has to be all of them together, not just the two of them. Carrie tells him it’s for Max’s medical bills. Carrie is definitely pulling strings here, and she is deeply hurt and struggling with her current identity and with her past, that she will be dusting off once again, if she is going to return to criminal activity.
“Who do I have to shoot to get a motherf**kin menu around here?”—Job says at Miles Diner
George Hunter holds a tribe council meeting to oust Alex Longshadow from his position as Chief. It doesn’t go as planned, as Proctor has leaned on and threatened all of the members who were originally going to vote in favor of Hunter. During the episode, Proctor put one of them in front of a car tire and showed him he had the keys to his daughter’s dorm room. Alex stood in front of him with a grin on saying, “Are you going to adjourn this meeting or what?” Alex and Proctor have a brief conversation afterward. Proctor didn’t reveal the details, just the methodology.
“Your father was a man of great wisdom. He knew, like you now know, that sometimes the way over a mountain is through it, and going through the mountain, well, that’s my specialty.”—Proctor tells Longshadow
After ascertaining information on the warehouse, Yawners and Lotus inform Hood that Proctor’s name is not attached in any way and they won’t be able to get a warrant. So what would any sheriff that’s not really a sheriff do? That’s right, grab his criminal buddies Job and Sugar, highjack a truck headed on delivery, drive it into the warehouse, and use some high-power explosives to blow it up.
As that scene is coming to a head, we see that Lotus was again giving Hood advice on how to handle going after Proctor. Much to his chagrin, he also told Hood he had long hoped it would be him who brought Proctor to justice, but he doesn’t mind that the Sheriff is leading the charge.
“I still don’t think you are much of a cop, but I think you are serious about getting Proctor. This town has been waiting for someone to do that for a long, long time, and I was hoping it was going to be me. What I’m saying is I don’t mind that it’s you.”—Proctor tells Hood
That’s it for this week #Fanshees. ‘Ways to bury a man” set forth the first stages in Hood’s attempt to take down Banshees biggest antagonist, Kai Proctor. As you may have learned from watching up until now, there are always reactions and repercussions for any action or attempt at the Amish head of crime, along with severe consequences.
He is a man who wields a ton of power and will use it at a moments notice, eerily similar to that of Brad Wesley, Ben Gazara’s character in Road House. It seems the last three episodes will set up a finale that may in fact top the level of action witnessed in Season One’s epic climax. Carrie is still very much a wildcard, needing money for Max’s healthcare. Nola Longshadow has been missing in the last few episodes, along with Kinaho gang member, Chayton Littlestone. Lastly, lets not forget, Rabbit is still out there.
Extras:
This week’s post-credits scene shows Lotus driving up to the warehouse and he stares incredulously at the burning remains of the building. He has long had suspicions about Hood’s background and past life prior to Banshee. This should raise a red flag more than ever. Should be interesting to see how Hood responds once Lotus questions him about warehouse.
Music:
The song playing in the closing credits is “99 Pounds of Dynamite” by Buddy Stuart
Zooming In:
