Everybody loves a good casting rumor, but none are more popular these days that the wild speculation surrounding the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII film directed by J.J. Abrams.
Since Abrams was announced as the man that will lead Star Wars for the next generation of fans, very little information has been leaked or announced about the project. So far about the only thing we know for sure is they are shooting on film instead of digital cameras, but even that bit of news is only coming from the director of photography and not Abrams, not Disney and not anyone at Lucasfilm.
So as with every rumor surrounding Star Wars: Episode VII we say take this with a big ole grain of salt.
The latest casting news surrounds Star Trek: Into Darkness bad boy Benedict Cumberbatch being rumored to take on a role in the new Star Wars franchise. Cumberbatch was excellent taking over the role of Khan in the most recent Star Trek film also directed by Abarams. (via Film Chronicle)
Like every other casting rumor that’s spawned from the Star Wars universe, there’s no solid information or source to credit with Cumberbatch’s alleged casting or what character he could potentially pay.
Now there’s two ways to take this news—first, Cumberbatch did work with Abrams just one film ago, and many directors find a certain actor or actress that becomes a muse for them in future projects. Quentin Tarantino has openly talked about his fascination of working with actress Uma Thurman, and there’s always the unfortunate pairing of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp (who really need to stop making films together). So it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Abrams was so impressed with Cumberbatch stealing the show in Star Trek, that he’d want him around for this Star Wars project as well.
The other side of the argument is Cumberbatch just played a major role in another Abrams’ led vehicle with ‘Star’ in the title. Now there’s never going to be confusion between Star Wars and Star Trek, but Cumberbatch did just take on an iconic role as Khan in the latter film released earlier this year, so is it too soon for him to take over a major starring role in the new Star Wars?
Truth be told, no one knows for sure what’s happening with Star Wars: Episode VII except for Abrams and the higher ups at Disney, but it’s certainly fun to speculate and given Cumberbatch’s acting chops, he’d certainly be a stellar addition.
