A “Blue Beetle” film is on the way with a director already working on the upcoming project that will feature the first Latino superhero to headline a DC movie…
“Blue Beetle” is coming to the big screen.
On Tuesday it was confirmed that Warner Bros. and DC have ordered a film based on the comic book character first introduced all the way back in 1939 with Angel Manuel Soto set to direct the project. Soto is best known for his work on the 2020 film “Charm City Kings” — a coming of age film that has received overwhelmingly positive reviews since being released.
Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer — who wrote the upcoming “Scarface” remake as well as the film “Miss Bala” — is set to pen the script.
Throughout history, there have actually been three different people to carry the Blue Beetle mantle in comic books:
“The original Beetle was an archaeologist named Dan Garrett, who discovered an ancient Scarab in an old Egyptian tomb that gave him superpowers which he used to fight crime. He was succeeded by the brilliant Ted Kord, who had no powers to speak of, but carried on the Blue Beetle legacy with just his wits and his fists, along with a whole lot of gadgets and a sharp sense of humor.
“The most recent Blue Beetle is Jaime Reyes, a teenager from El Paso, Texas who bonded with Dan Garrett’s Scarab. The artifact gave him incredible alien armor which he used to defend his hometown from all manner of metahuman criminals.”
The upcoming “Blue Beetle” film will focus on Jaime Reyes, who will soon become the first Latino superhero to headline a DC film project. While DC has featured Latino characters in past films such as “Suicide Squad” and “Birds of Prey,” this will be the first time a Latino hero will headline a movie.
In the comics, Jamie Reyes is bonded with the mysterious alien scarab through no choice of his own after it was embedded into his spine but the object also gave him extraordinary abilities, which he now uses under the guise of Blue Beetle.
“It is an honor to direct Blue Beetle, the first Latino superhero film for DC,” Soto when speaking to The Wrap. “I want to sincerely thank everyone at Warner Bros. and DC for trusting me to bring Jaime Reyes to life. I can’t wait to make history together.”
According to reports, the “Blue Beetle” movie will go into production later this year.
