“Black Adam” has just added a key role to the upcoming movie as Aldis Hodge will join the film to play Hawkman alongside Dwayne Johnson…

“Black Adam” has found the leader of the Justice Society of America.

Aldis Hodge — best known for his current role in the Showtime series “City on a Hill” as well as past appearances in “Straight Outta Compton” and the new “Invisible Man” movie — has been cast in the role of Hawkman where he’ll star alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the DC/Warner Bros. project.

Johnson official announced the news via Instagram.

THIS IS HAWKMAN 🦅 A pleasure to welcome @aldis_hodge to BLACK ADAM. HAWKMAN is a critical leading role for our movie, as he is the fiery leader of the JSA (Justice Society of America) and one of the most beloved and legendary characters in the DC UNIVERSE. I called Aldis personally as I wanted to surprise him that he got the role and it wound up being one of the greatest conversations I’ve ever had. Aldis: Hello? DJ: Hello, I’d like to speak to Aldis. Aldis: Who is this? DJ: This is Dwayne Johnson. * long pause Aldis: Whoever this is stop playing on my phone. DJ: This is Dwayne, is this Aldis? * longer pause Aldis: This shit ain’t funny, I said stop playing on my fucking phone. DJ: Aldis, this is DJ. I just called to say thank you so much for sending in your audition – it was great and I really appreciate the efforts you made. Just wanted to say thanks and best of luck in all you do. And one more thing — welcome to Black Adam. * longest pause Aldis: I’m sorry you’ll have to hold on for a one second. * he puts the phone down and walks away and all I hear is inaudible yells 😂 Aldis: DJAYYYY OHHHHH SHIT!!!!!! * Im laughing my ass off by now. DJ: You ok? You’re gonna crush this role! We went on to have an awesome conversation full of gratitude, love and motivation. Can’t wait to work with this very talented brother. The perfect HAWKMAN. Let’s get to work. #aldishodge #jsa #hawkman 🦅 #blackadam⚡️

Hawkman is an iconic character from the DC Universe with a couple of different origin stories so it’s not easy to know which one (if any) the movie will pull from. The original version of Hawkman was named Carter Hall, who was a reincarnated spirit of an ancient Egyptian prince engaged in a war with a priest along with the woman he loves. The prince (named Khufu) is murdered using a mystic dagger but he’s later reincarnated as an American archeologist named Carter Hall, who then goes onto battle his old nemesis reincarnated as a scientist named Anton Hastor.

In an updated version of the origin story, Hawkman’s real identity is an alien police officer named Katar Hol, who is sent to Earth alongside his partner Shayera from the planet Thanagar to capture a dangerous criminal. The couple decides to stay on Earth and adopt new identities as museum curators while operating as superheroes known as Hawkman and Hawkwoman.

All we know about this version of Hawkman is that he’ll be the leader of the Justice Society of America, who will eventually get involved in the story with Black Adam, who is being played by Johnson.

“Black Adam” was originally set for release in late 2021 but due to the coronavirus pandemic, production on the movie hasn’t started yet. So for now there’s no confirmed release date but filming on the movie is expected to begin early next year.
