Just days ahead of the release of Deadpool it looks like the “Merc with a Mouth” is already set up for a sequel…
Deadpool is definitely one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2016 and just a few days away from the release of the movie nationwide, it looks like FOX is banking on a sequel.
According to a report from the Hollywood Reporter, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who wrote the first Deadpool movie, have already been retained to begin work on a sequel. The movie opening this Friday, Feb 12 is expected to bring in some serious cash for the studio despite an “R” rating for a superhero film.
Estimates say Deadpool could earn north of $70 million for its opening weekend and with a budget that was rumored around $60 million, it looks like the movie will be a hit right out of the gates.
Director Tim Miller hasn’t been retained yet but according to the report, FOX wants to keep all the original team in tact for the Deadpool sequel with Ryan Reynolds starring as well of course.
As far as story ideas, Reynolds recently spoke about the possibility of more Deadpool movies and how much further into the character’s mythology he could dig. One of the biggest story ideas Reynolds would like to explore is the inclusion of X-Force — a team of mutants with a more forceful and authoritative manner in handling villains than the X-Men — and Deadpool was a frequent guest star in those comics in the 1990’s.
“In the future, if we’re doing a bunch more Deadpool movies, we’re really going to explore the X-Men a lot,” Reynolds said in a recent interview. “And maybe X-Force. X-Force is my priority. I really want to get that in.”
X-Force was a book made famous by Rob Liefeid, who also just happens to be the co-creator of Deadpool as well.
While the X-Men universe has continued to grow at FOX ahead of the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse release in May, it appears Deadpool might incorporate some equally popular yet never before seen characters into the upcoming sequel.
